No. Everyone is motivated differently and youve got to get to the core of who they are. Hes an unbelievable man, but hes incredibly demanding.. I didnt think there was a coach in the world that I couldnt play for. Its not to save the world or to save people. I guess on the other hand not so surprising when you think about all of the newspaper headlines these days dealing with corporate bad behavior. And the thing, whats interesting about reading all these books is what theyre all telling us is youve got to have a set of core values and youve got to live by them. But if we started having all of these, you know, kids take the, you know, Angela Duckworth grit test or, you know, some sort of, you know, psychological profile or take my core value test, wed lose them, and the word would get out that, you know, thats how were evaluating them, and it would kill us. And yeah, there were a lot of things she didnt do to get on the field for me. And as we come into this session, obviously were there early because we dont want to disturb the practice.

At the end of every single day in practice, youre going to get an email ranking you in that practice. What I consider most valuable about objective review is theres no subjectivity. But basically we all live on a leadership continuum, from people that cant lead worth a lick, people that are extraordinary leaders, and all weve done is weve moved them down the continuum a little bit, but not much. We want to be educated the way a Columbia student should be educated. And its certainly not just the bottom line. And all of a sudden, in a New York Times magazine years ago, there was a woman that was writing about her experiences studying Russian literature at Columbia. And then we also have them evaluate every teammate on whether or not they were living each core value, and we did it on a 4 point scale, sort of like a GPA, so 4 is obviously a 4.0, its an A average, so 4 is an extraordinary example of this core value. She called me up one day. And so what is critical is, you know, who we end up recruiting. Most certainly. In a typical narrative its laced with protections about why they havent achieved their potential. One is that I am going to improve by trying to beat everyone to death and every single minute of every single practice, but also the other kids will benefit from that because in order to deal with me, they have to raise their competitive level as well. So whats critical for you, and actually the hiring process is everything for you, and so this is where, again, this is something that Jack Welch used to say, and I loved it. Theyre just whining and whining about everything under the sun. There was nothing inspiring about them, and I was thinking gosh, none of this stuff works. And so often time its not just the training environment thats critical for us, its how we can get into, again, the mindset of the players to get them to change a certain mindset or a narrative thats protecting them from getting to their potential. So its almost like a gender pressure against leadership.
So this is where were trying to drive them. So we took every one of our principles and we attached a motivational quote that every kid in our program had to memorize. And thats one of the greatest compliments Ive ever received, even though its sort of framed as a backhanded compliment. And so what you asked earlier about this cauldron thing, we have three basic tools that we use that I think separate us. Anson: Yes. So even though theyve done nothing but lie to their parents about their performance, now theyre fed all this garbage thats based on the lies youve told your parents thats created a narrative that youve been cheated. All the different elements that are critical for our success in a practice and a game were recorded by the managers and then posted on the bulletin board.
